Chelsea Groton Foundation Awards Grant to NESS

Stonington, CT – The Chelsea Groton Foundation presented New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) with a $500 check earlier this month. This is the third consecutive year that Chelsea Groton has awarded a grant to NESS to support their ocean adventure STEM education programs in New London, CT.
Since 2014, NESS has provided New London Public School students with opportunities to get out on the water and learn by doing. Last year, NESS served over 500 New London students. NESS SEA (STEM Education Ambassador) AmeriCorps members contributed 1,175 hours of classroom support, tutoring, and mentoring to students of the STEM Magnet Middle School, part of Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School (BDJMS). NESS provides students with in-classroom and on-the-water experiences at NESS's locations in Stonington, CT, and in New London, CT, including Ocean Beach and Green's Harbor Beach.
Additionally, NESS delivered 75 programs to New London community organizations including the Drop-In Learning Center, New London Recreation Center, Jennings Family Resource Center, and Covenant Shelter. In 2015, NESS acquired New London Community Boating to reach even more students and provide them with free sailing instruction. NESS currently operates out of a total of seven locations in southeastern New England.
Chelsea Groton Foundation, Inc. was formed in 1998 as a Section 501(c)(3) organization and endowed with a $2 million dollar donation from Chelsea Groton Bank. Since then, over $2.1 million in grants have been awarded to hundreds of scientific, educational and charitable organizations located within the Bank's Connecticut and Rhode Island market area.
