Pine Point to Host Royce Speaker Series for Community Conversations
Stonington, CT — Pine Point School will host two important speakers on campus in April as part of the newly established Royce Speaker Series. Generously backed by current Pine Point grandparents Chuck and Deborah Royce, the Speaker Series will prove to be a great resource for Pine Point families and the greater community.
Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee of the Seattle Girls’ School will speak April 1 on how cultural values, power, privilege and differences affect the way we communicate. This talk will cover tools for questioning assumptions and ways to improve cross-cultural communication.
Dr. David L. Katz of Yale University will speak April 23. His talk, called “Feet, Forks, and the Fate of Our Families” touches on how popular culture glamorizes a lifestyle often at odds with the diet and exercise choices we know are best for healthy living.
Both talks are free and open to the public. Both begin at 7 p.m.
The series goes hand-in-hand with the school’s mission, said Head of School Diana Owen.
“At Pine Point School, we are not only focused on developing our students’ lifelong curiosity about their world, we want to support the adults in our community who are passionate about learning, as well,” Owen said. “The Royce Speaker Series provides families a way to connect and learn more about 21st Century issues. Our aim is to offer a chance to hear directly from experts and then discuss those topics with each other. Pine Point School is grateful for the Royces' support of our goal to provide an excellent learning environment for children, parents and our community.”
Since 2004, Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee has been a diversity speaker and a trainer on a variety of issues, including cross cultural communication, identity development, relational aggression among adolescent girls, ending bullying and bias in schools, prejudice reduction and coalition building, and gender bias in the classroom, especially in the STEM fields.
